The Fighting Games of 2005

There is a nice article from Gamedaily.com that talks about the fighting games of 2005:

"Wrestling: The WWE had another strong year of programming, highlighted by controversial moments (the "death" of the Undertaker, the crowning of new champions Batista and John Cena, the death of Eddie Guerrero) and plenty of memorable matches (ECW One Night Stand). Not to be outdone, a couple of video games also made the label worth loving again, courtesy of THQ and their strong development teams.
WWE's year didn't start this way, however. THQ's release of WWE Wrestlemania 21 turned a few heads with a new development team and engine. However, the gameplay was severely flawed, and the graphics just didn't impress. The game ended up being a mess and ripped to shreds by GameDaily writer Chris Buffa, and he's a WWE fan!
Fortunately, the WWE and THQ made a comeback, starting with the GameCube release WWE Day of Reckoning 2, a game that stands as one of the best wrestling games for the system. Utilizing a number of modes, including the return of the Bra and Panties match that so many fans adore, the game also featured tightened gameplay and plenty of wrestlers to choose from including John Cena and a few classic wrestlers, like Bret "The Hitman" Hart and Andre the Giant."

Star Wars Galaxies: New Game Experience

"Earlier in 2005 the Galaxies community was rocked by a substantial (and somewhat surprising) combat upgrade. Now six months later the core game has undergone an even more comprehensive redesign and been reborn as Star Wars Galaxies: New Game Experience.

The new game promises "improved character and profession development." When they say "improved" they really mean "simplified." There's a growing assumption across the industry that complex game mechanics or a multiplicity of options are somehow unrewarding. Believe it or not, some gamers actually crave complexity. Sadly, we're being squeezed out as companies seek to maximize player numbers and profits at the expense of depth and detail. "
